Ten years after the original Big Peace (1987) was created, Labat proposes a project to the city of San Francisco to comemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the Summer of Love. The city approved the installation of Big Peace II in Golden Gate park, but a heated public debate arrose ending with the cancelation of the project. In response Labat created Big Peace II in 2000.
